Spending Data of Urban Local Bodies

data visualisation, information design
(May, 2017)

Based on the principles of political action and distributive justice, this project puts a spotlight on the Indian Urban Local Bodies’ spending patterns.

In order for citizens to engage and participate in a democracy, a first step is for them to be aware of the ambient information. Ambient information is the system behind the stories. I spent 2-3 months understanding the structure, analysis and limitations of gathering spending data from the MCGM (Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai). We then extended this project for two groups IndiaSpend (a data-journalism site) and Battijala (a group for distributive justice).

I worked as a freelancer for the Mumbai-based UrbanSciences team.
